Winemaker Joseph Albajan whose estate Domaine de la Mirande and caves lie in the Herault region of the Languedoc has in recent times been nicknamed in the region as "Pape du Picpoul" Many times his wines are referenced in such publications as Le Guide Hachette as amongst the best in the appellation of Picpoul de Pinet and this regard is held not just throughout France, but Europe too.
The Domaine de la Mirande was created in the 1850s. Its name came from the word "Mirador" because it sits high overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Lake Thau and the moutains of Saint Clair et Saint Loup respectively in Sete & the Cap D"Agde.
Joseph has a life long attachment to the domaine as he has known it since he was a little boy. In 1988 after several years working there as an employee and managing the estate for more over ten years he bought the domain from its Bordelais owners an so began a new chapter in the Domaine's history.
To date Domaine De la Mirande operates 30 hectares of vines and organic viticulture is at the heart of the estates philosphy.
The cellar was renovated between 2003 and 2009
the tasting notes
A delicate dry white with subtle aromas and a wonderful freshness on the palate. In a nutshell vibrant, floral and clean with a long lingering finish, which in my notes...for what they are worth...scores it very highly!
the food matches
Makes for a great apperitif, but also matches wonderfully with shellfish, oysters in partuclarly, grilled or pan fried fish, vegetable dishes such as les aubergines farcies, a dish quite popualr to the Languedoc region.
